Proteus
Opening our festival this year we are pleased to present the screening of Proteus. A film recreating a decade-long love affair in the 18th century between two men in a Cape Town penal colony on Robin Island. Proteus is the remarkable result of a collaboration between award winning director John Greyson and Jack Lewis that was triggered by Lewis’s discovery of a transcript of a sodomy trial. It is a stunning period piece that skillfully explores the intersections of sex. race and politics

Whatever : A Teenage Musical
This fictional drama depicting the lives of Brighton teenagers was written and directed by award-winning documentary maker Daisy Asquith in collaboration with Dunstan Bruce of cult band Chumbawumba. It features a cast of talented 14 to 17-year-old actors, vocalists, MCs and beatboxers, who were discovered at local youth clubs and schools in Brighton.

What a loss to the world that this talented dancer, singer and actor Gregory Hines has passed away. While taking place in modern times, the movie transports the watcher back to a wonderful era in history when the greatest entertainers sang and tapped and Hollywood made the great Musicals.

Injustice
A film by Ken Fero focusing on individuals who have died in police custody and the ensuing efforts to gain justice for them. Christopher Alder died in custody in Hull Police station on April 1 1998. He was conveyed there for a breach of the peace, but on arrival was found to be unconscious. A video film recorded the last 11 minutes of his life. Janet Alder, Christopher’s sister, undertook a long campaign which eventually led to the arrest of five police officers. Despite this the Crown Prosecution Service presented such a weak case at the trial that the officers were acquitted. Screening will be followed by a Q&A session with director Ken Fero accompanied by Janet Alder and chaired by Professor of Criminology Joe Sims, JMU.

Yasmin
“Before Sept 11th I was an Asian. Now I’m seen only as a Muslim.”

Yasmin is the exciting and emotional story of a modern Pakistani woman living in England. Yasmin is trying to break through traditional rules set by her family and her unloved husband when the 11th of September jumps into her life. Everything changes now, she has to find her true identity and her true love and one day she has to make a decision.

One Week
A soon-to-be groom learns of a single unanswered question that now threatens to ruin his life forever. Waiting a full seven days for the test results turns out to be the most hectic week of his life. Directed by Carl Seaton and written by the director and lead actor, Kenny Young II, the movie spotlights an important issue in a stimulating way. There are no boring clichés, the actors are refreshing and the storyline captivates the viewer to the very end.

Mohabbatein
Screening as part of our Bollywood Night, Mohabbatein, or ‘Love stories’ as translated, is a movie which portrays a battle between two stubborn men and their opposing beliefs. This movie will appeal to anyone who loves a good story concerning life and love, highly touching and inspiring.
